Thousands of Americans Told to Wear Face Masks Over Frostbite Fears
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued extreme cold warnings for parts of the northern United States, particularly in Montana and North Dakota, due to the return of Arctic air
Residents are advised to wear face masks and other protective clothing to prevent frostbite, as wind chills could reach as low as -45°F (-43°C)
Frostbite occurs when skin and underlying tissues freeze, often affecting extremities like fingers, toes, nose, and ears. Symptoms include numbness, pain, and skin discoloration. In severe cases, frostbite can lead to permanent tissue damage
To protect yourself during extreme cold:
Dress in Layers: Wear multiple layers of warm clothing, including a hat, gloves, and a face mask to cover exposed skin.
Limit Time Outdoors: Stay indoors as much as possible. If you must go outside, keep exposure brief
Stay Dry: Moisture can increase heat loss. Ensure your clothing remains dry.
Monitor for Frostbite Symptoms: Look for signs like redness, numbness, or pain. If symptoms occur, seek medical attention promptly.
