Here's What To Do If You See A Coyote In Your Yard

Coyotes are increasingly venturing into urban and suburban areas, and spotting one in your yard can be unsettling. Here’s what to do if you encounter a coyote on your property to ensure your safety and theirs:

Stay Calm and Observe Coyotes are generally shy and avoid humans. If the coyote is simply passing through, it will likely leave on its own. Avoid running or making sudden movements, as this might startle or provoke it.

Make Yourself Big and Loud If the coyote lingers, stand tall, wave your arms, and make loud noises by shouting or clapping. This signals to the coyote that it’s not welcome and should leave.

Remove Attractants Coyotes are drawn to food sources like pet food, garbage, or fruit from trees. Secure trash bins, clean up fallen fruit, and avoid leaving pet food or water outside.

Protect Pets and Children Bring small pets and children indoors immediately. Never leave pets unattended, especially at dawn, dusk, or nighttime when coyotes are most active.

Use Deterrents Install motion-activated lights, sprinklers, or noise-makers to discourage coyotes from returning.

When to Seek Help If a coyote appears aggressive, injured, or unafraid of humans, contact local wildlife authorities for assistance.
