How to divide bleeding heart – for more of these unique, vibrant perennials

Dividing a bleeding heart plant (Dicentra spectabilis) helps rejuvenate older plants and allows you to grow more of these stunning perennials in your garden. Here’s how to do it:

Choose the Right Time The best time to divide bleeding hearts is in early spring before new growth appears or in fall after the foliage has died back.

Dig Up the Plant Use a shovel or garden fork to carefully lift the entire root system from the soil, keeping as much of the root ball intact as possible.

Separate the Roots Gently shake off excess soil and use a sharp knife or spade to divide the root clump into sections. Each division should have at least one or two healthy buds (or "eyes") and strong roots.

Replant Immediately Plant each division in rich, well-draining soil in a shaded or partially shaded spot. Water thoroughly to help establish the roots.

Maintain Moisture Keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy while the new divisions settle in.

With proper division and care, your bleeding heart will thrive and spread its beauty throughout your garden!
