How to Grow a Bleeding Heart Plant

The bleeding heart plant (Dicentra spectabilis) is a stunning perennial known for its delicate, heart-shaped flowers that dangle from arching stems. Here’s how to grow and care for it:

Choose the Right Location Bleeding hearts thrive in partial to full shade and prefer cool, moist environments. Plant them under trees or in shaded garden beds for best results.

Prepare the Soil Use rich, well-draining soil with plenty of organic matter. A slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0) works best.

Planting Space plants 18–24 inches apart in early spring or fall. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and plant at the same depth.

Watering & Maintenance Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Mulching helps retain moisture. Cut back yellowing foliage in summer as the plant goes dormant.

Fertilizing Feed with a balanced fertilizer in early spring to encourage lush growth and abundant blooms.

With the right care, bleeding hearts will reward you with graceful, romantic blooms year after year!
