Shoppers given five-day warning over avocados in supermarkets

Shoppers have been given a five-day warning about avocados in supermarkets as retailers urge customers to check their ripeness carefully.

Many supermarkets are updating their stock, meaning unripe avocados could take longer to soften.

Experts advise checking for ripeness by gently pressing the skin—if it yields slightly, it's ready to eat.

However, if it's too firm, it may take four to five days to ripen at home.

To speed up ripening, place avocados in a paper bag with a banana or apple. The ethylene gas released will help soften them faster.

Consumers should also be aware of shorter shelf-life issues, as some pre-ripened avocados might spoil quickly if not stored properly.

Always check for dark spots, mushiness, or a sour smell before consuming. With this five-day warning in mind, shoppers can plan ahead and avoid wasting money on unripe or overripe avocados.
