Think Twice Before Buying An Orchid In The Winter

Orchids are stunning houseplants, but purchasing one in the winter can be risky.

These tropical plants are sensitive to cold temperatures, and exposure to chilly air, even for a short time, can cause shock, wilting, or even death.

If you do buy an orchid during colder months, ensure it's well-protected from freezing temperatures during transport.

Another challenge is humidity. Winter air is often dry due to indoor heating, which can stress orchids and lead to bud drop.

To keep them healthy, maintain humidity levels around 50–70% using a humidifier or pebble tray.

Light is another factor to consider. Shorter daylight hours mean orchids may not receive enough natural light to thrive. Position them near a bright, south-facing window or supplement with grow lights.

If you’re new to orchids, it may be best to wait until spring for better growing conditions. But if you can provide warmth, humidity, and proper care, a winter orchid purchase can still be a rewarding experience!
