What is orchid root rot? Expert tips on how to treat it to keep this exotic houseplant alive

Orchid root rot is a common issue for orchid enthusiasts, typically caused by overwatering, poor drainage, or fungal infections.

Healthy orchid roots are firm and white, but when affected by root rot, they turn mushy, brown, or black, emitting a foul odor.

How to Treat Orchid Root Rot: Remove Affected Roots: Gently take the orchid out of its pot, and trim away any soft, discolored roots with sterilized scissors.

Disinfect the Roots: Dip the healthy roots in a fungicide solution to prevent further infection. –

Repot: Place the orchid in a new, clean pot with well-draining orchid mix. Avoid pots with no drainage holes. –

Water Properly: Ensure you’re not overwatering. Let the orchid dry out slightly between waterings.

1. Provide Proper Humidity: Orchids thrive in a humid environment, but avoid excess moisture around the roots.
