You’re Probably Washing Your Grapes Wrong—Here’s the Right Way

Washing grapes may seem like a simple task, but if you’re not doing it properly, you might be missing out on getting rid of dirt, pesticides, and bacteria.

Here’s the right way to wash your grapes to ensure they’re clean and safe to eat.

First, don’t wash grapes until you’re ready to eat them. Grapes have a natural coating that helps preserve them, and washing them too early can cause them to spoil faster.

When you're ready to enjoy them, fill a bowl with cold water and gently swish the grapes around. This will help loosen any dirt or debris.

For an extra clean, consider adding a small amount of vinegar or baking soda to the water. Vinegar can help remove pesticide residues, while baking soda works to eliminate dirt and bacteria.

Let the grapes sit in the solution for about 5–10 minutes, then rinse them under running water.

After washing, pat the grapes dry with a clean towel or paper towel before storing them in the fridge. This ensures they stay fresh longer.
